California kids are too fucking stupid and stoned to learn anything
useful.
Public school students in California will soon learn media literacy
skills to help them identify fake news online and distinguish ads from
legitimate news stories, thanks to a new law.

The law, which requires an education commission to consider
incorporating media literacy content into K-12 curricula when they’re
revised after Jan. 1, was introduced in February. Gov. Gavin Newsom
signed it in October.

California is one of a small but growing number of states, including
Texas and New Jersey, that are including media literacy skills in public
education, according to a report last year from Media Literacy Now, a
nonprofit group. California's new law is aimed at encouraging more
discerning consumption of content on social media and digital platforms,
where fake news and deepfake videos abound.

Young people are increasingly turning to social media platforms —
particularly TikTok — for their news. A Pew survey this year found 32%
of adults ages 18 to 29 say they regularly get news on TikTok, up from
9% in 2020.

TikTok exposes users to a variety of perspectives they might not find in
traditional news media. But researchers have found that TikTok's search
engine regularly displays videos rife with misinformation to users. And
as we've seen in the past, the proliferation of false information on the
app can have an outsize impact in the real world.

Fox News settles Dominion defamation case for $787.5m

Fox News has settled a defamation lawsuit from the
voting machine company, Dominion, over its reporting
of the 2020 presidential election.

In a last-minute settlement before trial, the network
agreed to pay $787.5m (£634m) - about half of the
$1.6bn initially sought by Dominion.

Dominion argued its business was harmed by Fox
spreading false claims the vote had been rigged
against Donald Trump.

The deal spares Fox executives such as Rupert
Murdoch from having to testify.

Fox News CEO Suzanne Scott blasted the network’s
fact-checking of then President Donald Trump’s false
election fraud claims as “bad for business” in an email
shortly after the 2020 presidential election, according
to multiple reports, citing a court presentation from
Dominion Voting Systems, which has portrayed Fox News
as a network in turmoil after the election as it moves
forward with its $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit.

Fox News apologized Saturday to a Gold Star family for
publishing a false story last month claiming that the
family had to pay $60,000 to ship the remains of their
fallen relative back from Afghanistan because the
Pentagon refused to pay.

“The now unpublished story has been addressed internally
and we sincerely apologize to the Gee family,” a Fox News
spokesperson said in a statement...

The apology came after a Military.com report this week
drew attention to the issue and indicated that the
right-wing outlet’s top executives had repeatedly been
notified by senior members of the Marine Corps that it
was pushing a false story.
