MIDDLETOWN, Ohio —
A crash report is providing new details on the moments that led to the
crash that sent a Lakota student to the hospital, where they remain in
critical condition.
The student was hit by a car last week while walking in a crosswalk near
the school.
The teen, Aspen Runnels, has been in Cincinnati Children's since the
accident.
According to a crash report, the driver stated she was looking away from
the road to adjust her baby's pacifier. The report states the driver
failed to yield the right of way to pedestrians in the crosswalk and
struck the teen in the crosswalk. The driver has not been charged.
Runnels' mother shared an update Sunday night, saying the teen's latest
CT scan was not promising — writing in a post that if Runnels survives,
there will likely be major complications.
The freshman could face language deficits and partial paralysis.
In the wake of the incident, several parents expressed concerns about
speeding and safety along busy Bethany Road, where the Lakota East
Freshman Campus sits.
School officials said there will be an increased presence at the Lakota
East Freshman campus for the rest of the school year at arrival and
dismissal.
The school is now working with Liberty Township and the Butler County
Sheriff's Office to review safety measures beyond that.
Meanwhile the errant black driver remains out of jail and the local
NAACP is holding a fundraiser to pay for emotional distress.
