America’s Republicans Are Bitchslapping Democrats
The president of the Houston Federation of Teachers called it “the worst
news we can imagine for our students and families.” The head of the
NAACP's Houston chapter called it "a crime against public education."
Houston's mayor assigned it a letter grade: F.

But, amid accusations that Texas Republicans were using Wednesday's long-
awaited takeover of the Houston Independent School District to siphon
local control of public education and push a pro-voucher, pro-charter
school agenda, Gov. Greg Abbott insisted the lone motivation behind the
move is HISD's 187,000 schoolchildren.

"All that is completely separate from what is happening with HISD," Abbott
said of his legislative agenda. Instead, the takeover will make sure
Houston schools will “no longer be failing their students,” the governor
said.

“There has been a longtime failure by HISD and the victims of the failure
are the students,” Abbott said, adding that we need to "come together and
reinvent HISD in a way that will ensure that we are providing the best
possible education for those kids."

LIVE UPDATES: TEA seizes control of Houston ISD, Texas’ largest school
district

The 10:20 a.m. takeover announcement by the Texas Education Agency set off
a day of rallies and news conferences, with some vowing to continue the
fight against it. Four years in the making, the news hardly came as a
surprise as Mayor Sylvester Turner warned Houstonians earlier this month
he'd heard it was coming and the elected HISD board late last week voted
to ended its long-running legal battle to stave off state intervention.

Mike Morath, the TEA commissioner under Abbott, said the takeover is both
mandated by law and is the best option for getting the state's largest and
nation's eighth-largest school system back on track. The TEA will appoint
a board of managers and a superintendent to oversee the district after the
school year ends in June.

“Even with recent improvements and despite good intentions from many,
Houston ISD as a system continues to allow chronically low achievement in
multiple schools," Morath said. “State intervention is necessary.”

The state can take over HISD, officials said, because of Wheatley High
School's five consecutive failing ratings and a 2019 state investigation
that found HISD board members violated multiple laws. Also, a state-
appointed conservator had been put in place at Kashmere High School for
two consecutive school years because of low academic performance.

Better rating than Dallas ISD
The takeover of the B-rated district sparked outrage from Democrats,
education advocates and teachers in Houston and at the Capitol in Austin.
HISD scored 88 points on the state rating scale released last year. That's
higher than the second-largest district in Texas, Dallas ISD, which scored
86 points. Northside ISD in San Antonio, also among the top 10 largest
districts in the state, scored 85.

Those urban districts, however, aren't facing anywhere near the same level
of TEA scrutiny as HISD, which will become only the 16th district in Texas
history to see its local school board replaced by a state board of
managers.

Sounds like the problem is the state in the first place. How can a state takeover solve a
problem that's the state's fault?

That constitutes a DEATH THREAT against a former President, Rudey:

9-65.200 - Threats Against the President and Successors to the
Presidency; Threats Against Former Presidents; and Certain Other Secret
Service Protectees
The Counterterrorism Section of the National Security Division has
supervisory authority over 18 U.S.C. §§ 871 and 879 cases. As great
caution must be taken in matters relating to the security of the persons
protected by 18 U.S.C. § 871, United States Attorneys are encouraged to
consult with the Counterterrorism Section (CTS) of the National Security
Division when they have doubts on the prosecutive merit of a case. For
the same reason, dismissal of complaints under 18 U.S.C. § 871, when the
defendant is in custody under the Mental Incompetency Statutes (18
U.S.C. §§ 4244, 4246), requires approval from CTS. In other cases,
United States Attorneys must consult prior to dismissing a count
involving, or entering into any sentence commitment or other case
settlement involving a § 871 charge.

https://www.secretservice.gov/newsroom/releases/2024/01/phoenix-man-arrested-making-online-death-threats-against-president-and

PHOENIX –David Michael Hanson, 41, of Phoenix, was arrested on Wednesday
for making online threats against the President and Vice-President.
Hanson was charged by Federal criminal complaint on Tuesday with five
counts of Threats Against the President and Successors to the Presidency
and five counts of Interstate Communication of Threats.

The complaint alleges that in November and December of 2023, while
living in Arizona, Hanson used a social media platform to post threats
to murder the President and Vice President of the United States. On
November 19, 2023, Hanson posted online a series of threatening
statements including one that stated, “#joeAndKamala I’m asking you to
resign on Monday your alternative is death brutally murdered.” After the
U.S. Secret Service spoke to Hanson and warned him that it was a Federal
crime to post such threats, on December 23, 2023, Hanson posted another
series of similar threats aimed at the President and Vice-President.

Each count of Threats Against the President and Successors to the
Presidency carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison, a fine of
up to $250,000, and up to three years of supervised release. Each count
of Interstate Communication of Threats carries a maximum sentence of
five years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and up to three years of
supervised release.

A complaint is simply a method by which a person is charged with
criminal activity and raises no inference of guilt. An individual is
presumed innocent until evidence is presented to a jury that establishes
guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

The United States Secret Service is conducting the investigation in this
case. The United States Attorney’s Office, District of Arizona, is
handling the prosecution.
